Hair show a cut above

On Tuesday 15 November WITT Te Pūkenga held its inaugural Hair, Beauty, Food and Art show, where 34 ākonga from across the hair and beauty programmes collaborated to showcase their creative and show-stopping work.

Set against the backdrop of the ākonga art exhibition ‘Between the Lines’, models were introduced as they walked the catwalk, highlighting the ākonga who did each hair and makeup look. 

Industry, kaimahi, friends and whānau were treated to an evening of entertainment with drinks and nibbles provided by the hospitality team.  

The event was an opportunity for industry to check out the student’s work and for students across multiple programmes to collaborate.

Working alongside the hairdressing and beauty students was a highlight for Jade Tito New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3) student.

“The show was a good experience being able to show off what we can do and doing it as a team,” Jade says.

Fiona Smith, hairdressing and HITO tutor, was excited to finally host the show after two years of delays due to Covid-19.

The show is an excellent opportunity for our students to showcase their skills and abilities to industry,” Fiona says. 

“The students have been preparing for the show for the last term. We wanted them to be able to apply all the skills they have learnt and increase these further whilst having fun. We want to show their audience just how fantastic they are.”

The event received lots of positive feedback from industry and Fiona Smith is already excited about the 2023 show.
