Rita Zhang, Acting International Director, said it is very exciting to welcome offshore international students back onto campus for the first time since the end of 2019.
“On Sunday, we will welcome our first international student from Korea, and on Tuesday, we will welcome two more international students from Nepal. Our pastoral care team will be there to pick them up from the airport and help them get settled into life on campus and our student hostel,” she said.
Zhang said that WITT has received a high number of international student applications with over 60 enrolments for the July intake which is roughly the equivalent of $1.2 million dollars. However, the student applications are subject to receiving visas.
“We have been receiving applications from students worldwide from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Malaysia.”
“I am very pleased that these students are choosing to study at WITT. The kaimahi here have so much experience to share with these students, alongside our modern learning facilities and a wide range of support available,” she said.
Zhang said that international students could help support the economic development of the Taranaki region and are an essential piece of the puzzle with the challenge we are facing around regional skills shortage.
“By the end of the year, we hope to have a substantial number of international students at WITT and share their skills with the wider Taranaki region, she said”
