Jullianne keen to help LGBT+ community

Helping the LGBT+ community is high up on the priority list for scholarship nursing student Jullianne Gooch.

The former Waitara High School student is one of seven students who were awarded with a WITT School Leaver Scholarship in 2021, covering a year’s tuition fees.

Her main goal is to help people, preferably people in the LGBT+ community, she says.

“I know what it can be like to not have proper support or care as a LGBT+ person,” said the 18-year-old.

While she is unsure what area of nursing she wants to learn towards, Jullianne said some tutors have said it could be possible to work with rainbow youth.

“I would quite enjoy that, however, I’m still not 100 per cent sure on where I want to go just yet.”

She applied for the nursing degree in the second half of her final year of school and wasn’t sure if it’s what she wanted to do. That changed quickly.

“Eventually, I was sure I wanted to go into the nursing degree because it just seemed the best fit for me.”

She had visited hospitals and medical clinics a lot and found it had been an interest for a while.

So far, she enjoys the nursing degree because it is teaching her how to properly take care of patients.

“Taking care of people is something I’m passionate about.”

Jullianne said being a scholarship recipient has taken some of the financial burden off her study, because she doesn’t have to get a large student loan.

“The scholarship has made it much cheaper for me to pursue the nursing profession and that has made me much less stressed about my future debts after I have finished my degree.”

WITT prides itself on the nursing degree. Nursing students have achieve a 100 percent pass rate for four years in a row and a 100 per cent employment rate this year.

Once completed, the Bachelor of Nursing allows registered graduates to work in a raft of areas including being a practice or district nurse, working in mental health, public health, research management, health promotion, education, elderly care, hospital care from medical, surgical, paediatrics and theatre.
