New carpentry tutor in Hāwera

Kia ora to the new Carpentry Tutor at Hāwera Campus

Weaving te reo Māori into carpentry training is the driver for WITT’s new Carpentry Tutor Harry Anneff.

“I want to use my te reo as part of the kaupapa of teaching building. Ultimately I would like to teach full immersion but you’ve got to take small steps to get the programme up and running,” says Harry.

Harry is running the carpentry programme at WITT’s Hāwera campus, which will see students build a whare for their community.

“With Harry’s vast industry experience in the construction sector, media, tikanga and education, he will be an outstanding kaiako for our ākonga,” says Director of Trades Training Primary and Creative Industries Daniel Fuemana.

From Eltham, with Turahui whānau on his mother’s side and Bulgarian/Pākehā on his father’s, Harry began a building apprenticeship straight from school and was able to travel the world with his trade. Returning home Harry completed a degree in total immersion Māori, taught te reo Māori at secondary school level and was the host of Marae TV on Māori Television for a number of years. Active in the community, Harry also runs a busy construction company.

“It’s the right time for these ākonga to get into construction, the industry is crying out for well-trained people.”
