Note to Self exhibition opens

There’s one thing studying art and design and another thing showing the work you have created to others. But that’s just what the mid-year graduating class of NZ Diploma of Art and Design (Levels 5 and 6) are being asked to do. From the invite-only opening event on Friday 23 June, graduating ākonga will have their favourite pieces of work on display for friends, whānau and complete strangers to see.

“Receiving and responding to criticism is a key part of professional practice and something ākonga practice throughout their study, but it does take work to build resilience to feedback,” says Art and Design Tutor Dr Elliot Collins.

He adds that it is wonderful to see ākonga confidence grow and their art language develop as they show their work and interact with an audience.

The Note to Self exhibition is a destination event for the graduating class’s year and has seen them not only produce work for the show, but also curate, install and market the exhibition.

“From naming the show to developing wall labels, ākonga run it all - it’s the most real-world experience we can give them and it is a celebration of their time with us,” says Elliot.

Visitors can expect a range of artworks from traditional mediums such as paintings, prints and photography through to thought-provoking installations.

Note to Self opens on Friday 23 June and is open to the public from Saturday 24 June (which is also the WITT Te Pūkenga Info Day) to 8 July in F Block (F Block, the arts block, is down the two sets of stairs off the main entrance on Bell Street). It is open to the public from 10am-2pm Monday to Saturday or by appointment.
