Post-graduate tutor thinking out-of-the-box

As a team of kaimahi prepare to offer the new Post-Graduate Certificate and Diploma programme for the first time at WITT, new tutor Steve Scott is excited to be teaching the programme.

 “I have been working in education since 2002, gaining many skills along the way alongside completing four qualifications including my Masters’ Degree in Business Administration and my PHD in Management,” he said.

Steve has a keen interest in entrepreneurship and innovative learning. He’s been lucky enough to learn from and support his wife who is a consultant to female entrepreneurs around the world, calling himself a ‘consultant to the consultant.’

“I have been able to keep in touch with the entrepreneur environment through my wife and taught entrepreneurship at Massey University,” he said.

Steve’s passion in the classroom is to encourage students to think out-of-the-box and use innovative thinking to come up with solutions.

“While I was studying my PHD I was able to travel to Stanford University to learn about concepts such as design thinking,” he said.

Steve has used his knowledge of design thinking and implemented it throughout his teaching.

“It’s important to me to know what the students want to learn, if I don’t know what they want how I am supposed to give it to them.”

“I want the postgraduate study at WITT to be about students exploring ideas and critiquing them while encouraging out-of-the-box thinking. My teaching style is about collaborative learning and it’s important to me that their learning is not a content delivery service,” he said.
